Using digital models of wiring harnesses and production processes, engineers can automatically generate operational instructions. Engineers can incorporate operation manual templates, libraries, and style sets, ensuring that these instructions are accurate and strictly adhere to a company’s industrialization and quality standards. The process starts with a digital model of the harness. Initially, this looked like a simple diagram of the wiring harness layout, but engineers have enriched the design with specific components, materials and other data to make it a digital model of the physical wiring harness. The digital harness model is the foundation of a model-based harness engineering approach.
Based on this model, the wire harness engineering software can generate extremely rich operating instructions, including data charts for cutting the wire, and this data can be fed directly into the wire cutting machine. The generated instructions also include twisted pairs, jacketed multi-conductor, schematics for splicing a daisy chain, and detailed instructions for pre-wired or blanking the connector. Engineers can also generate various wire harness tooling drawings to show shop operators how to lay out subassemblies on a circuit board. Using a digitized process, making it a continuous process with the same data feed from start to finish, can greatly improve the efficiency and accuracy of the final assembly process.
