The new centralized architecture will significantly reduce the weight and cost of wiring harnesses, especially low-voltage wiring harnesses. The domain architecture separates the various physical areas within the vehicle, adding area controllers as high-speed data and power hubs. Upward integration into the zone controller reduces the physical complexity of the wiring harness in its current state and significantly reduces the number of ECUs. In a study of an OEM, Aptiv found that the use of a zone controller allowed the integration of nine ECUs and the use of hundreds of individual wires, resulting in a reduction of 8.5 kg in vehicle weight.
