Model-based processes unify previously siloed design and manufacturing domains by automating data exchange and provide engineers with decision-making capabilities across domains. Tribal culture previously held by experienced engineers can now be captured through integrated design rules that support automation to consistently guide all engineers and check for problems in designs.
In the harness industry, digitalization and model-based enterprise encompass three key aspects (Figure 5). The first is the digital model and manufacturing process of the wire harness product. The digital model of the wiring harness and the production process together constitute the digital simulation model. Automation is the second pillar. Modern harness design and manufacturing solutions can use design rules created by senior engineers to automatically convert digital harness and process models into process checklists, how-to guides, and other output formats.
