Medium Dependent Interface (MDI)
The connection between the two PHY chips is called a media-specific interface (MDI), which includes electrostatic protection, common-mode interference suppression, DC isolation, on-board connectors and twisted-pair cables.
Common Mode Noise Rejection
A common mode choke (CMC) filters common mode noise on the MDI. It is important to minimize common mode noise as it can interfere with the PHY’s receiver. Also, since common-mode noise is a single-ended source of radiation, it results in higher radiated emissions.
