A high-quality crimp must achieve the required area reduction without causing glitches, over- or under-voltage, or bending conditions that can compromise connection reliability.
Aside from visual inspection, the traditional test is pullout force. This is an overall measure of crimp quality and can be difficult to perform on a 100% basis in a production environment. Crimp force has also been used as a metric, but by itself does not provide required data.
Driven by the requirements of 6-Sigma and other international standards, crimp height measurement is an accepted method that, combined with crimp force measurement, is superior to destructive methods, sampling methods, or techniques that rely solely on crimp force.
