In voltage regulators, there are three main types of capacitors commonly used as voltage input and output bypass capacitors: multilayer ceramic capacitors, solid tantalum electrolytic capacitors, and aluminum electrolytic capacitors.
Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) combine the advantages of small size, low effective series resistance and inductance (ESR and ESL), and wide operating temperature range, and are often the first choice for bypass capacitors. It’s not impeccable. Depending on the dielectric material used, the capacitance can shift significantly with temperature and AC and DC bias.
