Traditional low-value solid-state tantalum capacitors on the market tend to use smaller housings, resulting in higher equivalent series resistance (ESR). Large value (>68 μF) tantalum capacitors can have an ESR of less than 1Ω, but are generally larger.
A new tantalum capacitor has recently appeared on the market, which uses a conductive polymer electrolyte instead of the common manganese dioxide solid electrolyte. In the past, solid-state tantalum capacitors had limited inrush current capability, requiring a series resistor to limit the inrush current to a safe value. Conductive polymer tantalum capacitors are not limited by inrush current. Another benefit of this technology is lower capacitor ESR.
