The leakage current of any tantalum capacitor is several times greater than that of an equivalent ceramic capacitor and may not be suitable for ultra-low current applications.
For example, at an operating temperature of 85°C, a 1µF/25V tantalum capacitor has a maximum leakage current of 2.5µA at the rated voltage.
Several manufacturers provide conductive polymer tantalum capacitors with 0805 case, 1μF/25V, 500mΩESR. Although slightly larger than the typical 1µF ceramic capacitors in 0402 or 0603 housings, the 0805 offers a significant reduction in capacitor size in applications such as RF and PLLs where low noise is the primary design goal.
