2D on-substrate inductors, further subdivided into spiral inductors and racetrack inductors; 3D on-substrate solenoid inductors with magnetic bar cores; in-substrate spiral inductors, and 3D in-substrate toroidal inductors. The fabrication of MEMS inductors still presents challenges. Air-core MEMS inductors are available for frequencies above 22 MHz (VHF range), but lower frequencies require a magnetic core. Unfortunately, while gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductor devices can be used to design VHF power electronics, magnetic materials have not kept up, and their large core losses are a limiting factor in VHF power converter development.
