Back in 1919, “passenger coaches without horses” were few in number and ran at fairly slow speeds. While they were on the street, the windshield was not installed. Drivers and passengers generally use goggles to protect against inclement weather, insects, and other road debris. Imagine what it would be like to have no windshield in a car moving at high speed. As motor vehicles became more common and speeds increased, wind and small debris hitting drivers in the face became a growing problem. To reduce this hassle, manufacturers added a piece of glass to the car, literally called a windshield. The new windshields are more comfortable for the driver, but they’re not strong enough to fend off small flying debris. These original windshields were hand cut from flat glass. But, unfortunately when the glass shatters, the flat glass shatters into large, dangerously sharp shards that don’t seem to have the qualities of a satisfactory windshield.
