Unique electrical situation
In a less than ideal situation, you only have access to one end of the wire harness or one end of the connector. Because a multimeter requires a complete circuit to properly test a wire or harness, the previous method didn’t work. This is where the power probe shines, as it only needs one connection to function properly. Although there are multiple power probe types, the approach remains relatively the same.
Use the red alligator clips to connect the probe’s receiver to the connection you want to test. You can use small pins, alligator clips, or other wires to access the pins inside the harness. As shown above, take your power probe transmitter and run it along the wire/harness you want to test. In a successful test, there will be a constant tone as you run the transmitter along the wire. If there is any disturbance or change in the volume, this indicates a short or open circuit in the wires.
