The basic operation of an IGBT is simple: applying a positive voltage UGE from gate to emitter (E) turns on the MOSFET. The voltage connected to the collector (C) then drives the base current through the bipolar transistor and MOSFET; the bipolar transistor conducts and the load current can flow. When the voltage UGE≤0V, the MOSFET is turned off, the base current is interrupted, and the bipolar transistor is turned off at the same time.
