Haptic feedback isn’t the only potential application for pMUTs in the metaverse. With appropriate modifications to the design, pMUTs hold promise for levitation, particle manipulation, and photoacoustic imaging. Early efforts to develop pMUTs used polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the piezoelectric layer. The piezoelectric coefficient of PVDF is too low to generate the required sound pressure for ultrasonic-based haptic effects. PZTs have the required piezoelectric coefficients and can be fabricated into pMUTs suitable for integration into portable devices using existing production equipment.
